Roofing in Oak Ridge, from cemesto homes to the Preserve

Oak Ridge has 80-year-old wartime houses and recent subdivisions a few miles apart. They need very different things from a roofer, and we price each one for what it is.

Wartime houses

Many of the houses built in the 1940s were prefabricated cemesto homes. Their roofs are low-slope, and the homes are about 80 years old. Before any tear-off, we check what the existing roof and siding are made of and handle them by the rules. A low-slope roof also needs a different product than a steep one, and we'll explain why.

The newer neighborhoods

The Preserve at Oak Ridge (annexed in 2003) and Hendrix Creek are recent subdivisions with architectural shingles. Their roofs are mostly young, and the work there is storm damage and the first repairs.

Wind off the water

Melton Hill Lake and the Clinch River wrap the city on three sides. Homes near open water take more wind, which breaks shingle seals along the edges and ridges first.

What we'd do on an Oak Ridge roof

  • A free drone inspection, with photos you keep.
  • A check of the existing materials before anything comes off an older home.
  • A written price, line by line.
  • Cleanup with a magnet sweep, and a walk-through at the end.

Common questions

Is the drone inspection really free?

Yes. There's no charge and nothing to sign. We fly your roof, take close-up photos of every slope, and go through them with you. The photos are yours whether you hire us or not. If your roof is in good shape, we'll tell you that and leave.

After a storm, should I call my insurance company or a roofer first?

We'd get a free inspection first. It tells you whether there's damage worth a claim before anything goes on your record. If there is, you file the claim with your insurer (it's your claim) and we'll document the damage, write the scope, and meet the adjuster on the roof with you. If there isn't, you've lost nothing but an hour.

Which areas do you cover?

Knoxville and the towns around it: Farragut, Hardin Valley, Karns, Powell, Oak Ridge, Maryville, Lenoir City, Sevierville and Seymour. That covers parts of Knox, Blount, Loudon, Anderson and Sevier counties. If you're just outside that list, text us your address and we'll tell you honestly whether we can get to you.

Do you tear off the old roof or go over it?

We tear it off. Going over an old roof hides rotted decking, adds weight, and can shorten the life of the shingles on top. Inside Knoxville city limits, an overlay only avoids the permit if the first layer is intact, and you still give up the chance to see the deck. Tear-off costs a little more and tells you exactly what's under there.
